Achievement and creativity


For the past, the threshold theory has been predominantly prevailing for the view concerning the relationship between creativity and intelligence (Runco, 1991). This theory indicates that intelligence and creativity are related, however it is working only up to a moderate level of intelligence (e.g., Torrance, 1962; MacKinnon, 1962; Barron, 1969; Albert & Elliott, 1973). Barron and Torrance have suggested that approximately precise estimate of the cut off, IQ of 120. However, surprisingly, recent investigations of the threshold have contradictory results (Runco, 1991; Runco & Pezdek, 1984).
In particular, when the measure of intelligence employed academic achievement as Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and California Achievement Test (CAT), the relationship between intelligence and creativity is positively significant (Mednick & Andrew, 1967). In other words, the relationship between intelligence and creativity is still vague; however, the relationship between achievement and creativity might have relatively strong relationship. This interesting result might be derived from the discrepancy of concept between IQ and achievement tests. Contras to the IQ which is used to predict general intellectual ability, achievement tests are very confounding construct which reflect even specific learning experiences (Anastasi, 1982). When it comes to creativity, learning experience plays an important role for it reflects specific domain knowledge and procedural knowledge. A series of research show that knowledge and experience influence creative ability (Runco, Dow, & Smith, 2006; Runco & Chand, 1995; Greeno, 1978; Glaser, 1984). In other perspective, achievement might indicate how the students have been trained to solve the problems in the specific domains, so called disciplines. Although I carefully assume the positive relationship between creativity and achievement, the belief that achievement directly influences creativity should be investigated. The biased belief about the relationship between academic achievement and creativity has been prevailed in Korea, and it might cause pitfalls for creativity education. In this respect, the relationship between creativity and achievement should be investigated precisely.

Problem finding as a mediator on creativity


In addition to achievement, problem solving ability should be investigated, since problem solving ability has been regarded as a critical component for creativity. However, recent research have addressed problem finding to predict creativity (Wakefield, 1985; Runc & Okuda, 1988; Hu, Shi, Want, & Adey, 2010), since Csikszentmihalyi and Getzels (1970) raised questions of discovery ability as a critical component for creativity. Csikszentmihalyi and Getzels found that discovery-oriented behaviors predict the originality of the artwork. In addition, study, Csikszentmihalyi and Getzels found that artists who are superior at problem finding in the experiment show more productivity in the real world, even 18 years later (see Csikszentmihaly, 1990). In particular, diverse components interact in the real world (Albert, 1975), thus key factors might intervene dynamic of creative thinking process.
For instance, problem finding in the real problem tasks can predict high creativity more than problem solving. In the real world, problem finding ability can mediate the effect of achievement and problem solving ability for creativity. In the case of Korea, the international achievement indices show that Korean students are good problem solvers, but the problem finding ability seem not to congruent with the problem solving ability. Thus, this group would show the problem solving influence creativity differently according to the level of problem finding ability.


Research purpose


Therefore, first, this research aims to show effect of achievement, problem solving, and problem finding ability on creativity respectively.


Secondly, this research aims at figuring out the role of problem finding as mediator of achievement and problem solving respectively to predict creativity.

Research Question


In case of Korean student,
1.Does achievement predict creative ability?
2.Does problem solving and problem finding ability predict creative ability after controlling achievement?
3.Is the interaction effects between problem solving-problem finding, achievement-problem finding significant?
