Student and teacher
engagement

On this site, engagement is the word used to indicate a strong connection between the student and instruction. Here creativity is the blending of person, process, product and press which results in an apt and original design. Father of positive psychology, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, has spent decades studying what could make human life more rewarding. He research has been consumed in finding what elevates the idea of self in relation to the universe. His findings show three essential elements to a good life (happiness):


  1. Pleasure (least predictive)
  2. Engagement (most predictive) - you are doing something that expresses who you are (FLOW)
  3. Meaning (in between) - what you are doing connects you to something greater than yourself making the feeling that life is worth living.

By placing these three essential elements in the classroom, life can become more rewarding for teachers and students in the educational environment. This Wikipage is dedicated to these essential elements with a focus on engagement-- specifically student and teacher engagement-- and its link to creativity.

To review the Csikszentmihalyi's concept of FLOW the following are conditions of the FLOW experience:

  1. There are clear goals every step of the way.
  2. There is immediate feedback to one’s actions.

8,000 interviews were conducted by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and his team to understand what makes people enjoy what they are doing. Responses that emerged as a common thread were that they lost a sense of time, enraptured, forget past and future, feel like they are making meaning.

v Self-conscious disappears; there is a loss of an awareness of self

v Sense of time becomes distorted

v Auto-telic – experience becomes its own reward; the goal is the activity itself

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi lectured that babies and young children are “informavores”…they “eat” learning. At school learning becomes very different from what children love to do which is to learn.

Doors to Destiny


For several years I taught in a large chorus/drama room known as E110. There were five doors associated with that room: the exterior door, my co-teacher’s office door, the door to the costume room, my office door, and the door from the hallway into E110. In each of these doors, I experienced a moment of great learning—a destiny moment. Take a moment to walk through each of these doors with me and my students then share your own “doorway to destiny” moment you have had as a teacher or as a student.
